This is my proudest piece of film work. Many people I love and many different elements aligned perfectly for this film to become what it is. From the early days of this script idea three years ago to August of 2022 when the film premiered to the public the script went through an evolution of being hastily created, then forgotten about and then rediscovered and rewritten completely.
While writing this Pink Floyd, Gershon Kingsley, Brian Eno and other artists from the sixties and seventies helped me creative a visual of how I wanted the color palettes and the aesthetic to be for certain scenes. I've always had a natural eye for photography and cinematography so I was confident in that aspect, but storytelling was different.
The original script is moderately different from the final product as is most films. Scripts are more of a guide to get the point of the film across to the actors for me. I wrote the final flashback scene of Mikey as a young boy overhearing his mother talk about her past with Kate as a way to cement the fact that in a way this darkness between Kate and Alyssa never really went anywhere it was just buried away in their subconscious, unacknowledged and was the same way for the people closest to them.
There's a lot I have to say about this film, but to anyone who is reading this that wants to make films or any art just understand that the discouragement, dozens of hours and time and money that you spend on your craft are normal and will pay off. This film cost $600 out of pocket and took easily over fifty hours of writing and rewriting to come to a final version. Shooting happened mostly within 2-3 months during summer and fall, but a 4 month break was taken and the final scenes were finished in December and January. After all that another 8 months was spent editing the film.
Every film I make is a gamble. My directing could be shit, the story could end up not making sense, the acting might suck, who cares though. Anything happening in an artists life will translate through the piece. Take a chance though see what you can accomplish, sounds corny, but you won't really ever know unless you try.
